Student Travel Therapy Resources
Our rehab therapy team is better because we’ve been in your shoes. And it shows.
What is Rehab Travel Therapy and What are the Benefits?
Physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, speech language pathologists and social workers can all find rehab therapy travel jobs. Facilities use travelers in 13-week assignments to fill temporary positions, due to temporary staffing needs.
Unlike other specialties, travel therapists don’t have to wait to find a job. These specialties can go right into a travel job, without working as a permanent staff member first.
Competitive Compensation
It’s no secret that travelers make more money. Rehab therapy travelers earn a regular wage, but also receive a tax-free stipend that helps out with duplicating housing costs and meals.
Mentorship
Got a question about how travel therapy actually works? Many of our recruiters actually started as Triage travelers, some embarking on their journeys immediately after graduation, others later in their career. No matter what you want to know, chances are good that someone on our team has the experience to help.
Experience Other Locations
If you want the freedom to travel, but you’ve got student loans to pay back (no shame in that game, school’s expensive), a travel rehab job is how you can get the best of both worlds. You’ll be able to work regular hours, yet have time when you’re off to be able to see the sights in your temporary location. Like where you are? It’s sometimes possible to extend longer than the regular 13 weeks.
Flexibility
You can take time off between assignments to recharge or pursue personal interests. Additionally, you have the flexibility to chose where you go, allowing you to explore different cities or regions based on your preferences and lifestyle.
How Does it Work?
We know that a travel therapy job search isn’t like many other job searches. If your cohorts aren’t looking for travel jobs, your job search will be completely different. That’s why our team of rehab therapy recruiters are here to help every step of the way.
And because many of our recruiters are former travel clinicians themselves, we’ve walked a mile in your shoes. Literally.
New Grads Earn a $1500 Sign-On Bonus
New rehab therapy grads qualify for a $1500 sign-on bonus, just by taking three consecutive assignments with Triage. It’s that simple. Even better, we’re qualifying anyone with under a year of experience as a new grad, which means that you’re eligible, even if you’ve taken an assignment with another company.
And because we’re all about transparency, here’s the fine print:
- New grads are any therapist with under one year of experience
- Must take three consecutive contracts with no more than a 30-day gap. Need to head home to see family in between assignments? That’s why we’ve built in that 30-day gap to give you more flexibility
- $1500 is paid out at the end of your third contract

Texas Rehab Therapy Travel Jobs
Texas is a hot spot for travel rehab therapy jobs and we don’t just mean the weather. Whether you’re looking for a big city or want to experience a rural retreat, there’s something for everyone in Texas.
Big cities like Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin have nearly 20 million people between them and all the big-city amenities so you’ll never be bored. But if you’re looking for an active assignment, there’s so much to do. The two national parks in Texas are Big Bend and Guadalupe, but there are other national historic sites and preserves. After crossing the national parks off your bucket list, visit some of the 89 state parks scattered across Texas.
And the food. Tex-Mex reigns supreme here and if you’re in Houston, check out Ninfa’s where fajitas were invented.
What Rehab Therapy Travelers have to say
You have questions? We have answers.
Travel therapy is a way to connect qualified rehab therapy professionals with short-term job openings throughout the country. They’ll fill the open position and you get to experience different areas of the country. Win, win!
Ultimately, this answer is totally individual. Some folks travel because they get to check out other parts of the country. Others are strictly in it for the paycheck because travelers make more money than staff. No matter what your reason, we can help determine if traveling meets your goals.
There are many different reasons why travel jobs exist. Some facilities are filling in when their staff therapist goes on maternity leave or short-term disability. Others might be rural, so they struggle to staff a full-time therapist. Some others may have short-term openings because of temporary population changes. Many of the facilities are well-run, but if you’re walking into a location with challenges or a high caseload, we’ll tell you.
Two is better than one and that’s why it’s possible to travel together with a friend. In fact, we have a lot of travel pairs! Finding jobs together can be a little more challenging, but it’s definitely possible.
Most travel contracts are 13 weeks. Decide you like the location? You can often extend or even receive a full-time offer. Where you want to go is totally up to you.
Travelers receive a good chunk of their paycheck as a tax-free stipend meant for housing and meals when away from home. Spend less than your stipend and that money’s all yours, allowing you to pay off those student loans faster.
There are so many options for temporary housing when you’re a rehab therapy traveler since you obviously don’t want to sign a year-long lease. Many people use Airbnb or Vrbo to find a place to call home. There’s also a company called Furnished Finders that connects healthcare travelers with fully furnished rentals. Others decide to live in a hotel for their contract. Your recruiter can help you find housing, but ultimately where you live is up to you. Some companies take your tax-free housing stipend and put you up in questionable accommodations, but we think you should like where you live, or at least choose it yourself.
With Triage, you’re in luck. Many of our rehab therapy recruiters have been travel therapists, so chances are that your recruiter has literally walked a mile in your shoes. Got questions or want to know how to handle a specific situation? We’ve got you covered.
We know what to do when it comes to getting you licensed in the state you want to work in. You’ll need a valid license in your home state and then we can talk about applying for others. For instance, California licenses can take 3-4 months to process, which means that you’ll need to start early if California is on your bucket list. Also available is the PT compact, where certain states agree to accept each other’s PT licenses. If you’re eligible for the PT compact depends on where you hold your primary license. As a bonus, we also reimburse for additional licensing costs directly related to your travel assignment, so save your receipts!
We know how important continuing education is. That’s why we reimburse for CEUs like many full-time positions would. You’re eligible for CEU reimbursement once you’ve completed your first assignment and are starting your second. We’ll reimburse up to $300 each year.
